A fine “Selenus Pattern” bone chess set, Germany, late 18th century

delicately carved, one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with double pierced galleries and surmounted with Maltese crosses, queens similar but with single galleries, bishops with baluster knops and slender stems, knights as carved and arched horses’ heads, rooks as raised pierced turrets surmounted with Islamic crescents, the king 11cm high, the pawn 4.5cm high.
