An interesting “Frederick the Great versus Napoleon” cast metal chess set, German, early 19th century
the Napoleonic side with a darker patination, the Frederick the Great side ‘silvered’, kings as Frederick and Napoleon, queens as consorts, bishops as hussars, knights as horses’ heads, rooks as raised turrets, pawns as Prussian Grenadiers-of-the-Line and Napoleonic Old Guard, the king 4.6cm high, the pawn 3.6cm high, together with a 19th century pine and boxwood chess board/box, 26.2cm wide (when open).
