A “Selenus Pattern” polished bone chess set, Germany, early/mid 19th century

one side stained nut or chocolate brown, the other side left natural, kings with double galleries, queens with single galleries, bishops with attractive petal crowns, knights as horse’s heads, rooks as cylindrical, slender turrets, pawns with baluster knops, the king 11.7cm high, the pawn 4.3cm high, in a wooden chess board/box for chess and nine men morris, 26.5cm wide, the interior lined in green baize, sold with a set of 24 ebony and wooden turned draught counters, each 3cm diameter.
