A leather-bound and gilt-tooled chess and backgammon board in the form of a ‘book’, circa 1890
for backgammon on the inside, and for chess on the outside, the hinged board/box folding to resemble an antiquarian book, “History of Scotland” gilt-tooled on the decorative spine, marbelised paper to the ‘leaves’, together with 32 wooden counters, inlaid chess motifs on one side, a plain lighter coloured wood on the other (for backgammon), together with a leather shaker and two die, 43cm wide, 38cm deep, 3.5cm high (when open flat), the chess squares each 3.8cm wide.
