An Indian Export ‘Pepys Style’ Ivory Chess Set, Vizagapatam, early/mid 19th Century
one side stained red, the other side stained green, kings with elaborate foliate decoration, queens similar but of smaller size, bishops as stylised mitres with finials, knights as arched horses heads, rooks as turrets with brickwork and spire finials, pawns with baluster knops
King: 9.3cm high, base: 3.3cm diameter
Pawn: 4.2cm high, base 2.6cm diameter
