An Interesting German Bone 'Selenus Pattern' Chess Set, Early 19th Century
one side stained brown, the other side left natural, kings with featured 'urns' and reeded feather finials, queens similar but more slender in shape, bishops with slender baluster columns, rooks as cylindrical turrets, pawns with baluster shaped columns and tear finials, in a hinged wooden box of later date with a lid
King: 9.3cm high, base diameter 2.1cm
Pawn: 4.9cm, base diameter 1.8cm
Box: 18.4cm wide, 8.7cm deep, 5.7cm high
Stock Reference: MJ 1877
Natural Side: Some chipping to knop on king, hairline age cracks to king and queen, chipping to knop of one bishop, some surface dirt but nice, shiny patina.
Brown Side: hairline age crack to king and queen, chipping to lower knop on king, small chip to one rook, lovely shiny surface patina.
Box: 'Very Good'.
