A Jaques Staunton Weighted Boxwood & Ebony Chess Set, 1920s-30s

both kings stamped JAQUES LONDON in red around the rim of the bases, in a hinged box with a green label: GENUINE Staunton Chessmen...Howard Staunton's facsimile signature...J. JAQUES & SON, LTD., LONDON, ENGLAND

King: 10cm (just under 4 inches high)

Pawn: 5.4cm high

Box: 21cm wide

Condition

Boxwood Side:

Nice figuring to the wood, White King stamped JAQUES LONDON in red, slight lean to the queen, neat repair to ear of one knight, nice shiny polished patina, no chips.

Ebony Side:

Black king stamped JAQUES LONDON in red, green baizes clean and in excellent condition, chessmen 'excellent', with no chips or cracks.

Box:

Good. A few minor surface scratches. Green label clean, tight and intact. Rubbed mark (water stain?) to green baize inside lid. Further stains to baize interior.

Decent Jaques Staunton from the 1920s- 30s period, with the king coming in at just under 4 inches high. This classic pattern was first patented by the firm of Jaques (London) in 1849. The width of the King's base is 4.6cm.
