“Jaques Style” St George Chess Chess Set
A Good Weighted English St George Pattern Boxwood and Ebony Chess Set, in the Jaques manner, circa 1880
with green felt baizes to the underside of the chessmen, in a mahogany lidded box with interior compartments and brass inlaid roundel to the lid, no signature to either box or chessmen, but very similar to Jaques St George sets of the period
King: 12.2cm high
Pawn: 6.1cm high
Box: 23.5cm wide, 18cm deep, 12cm high (when closed)
Stock Reference: MJ 1644
Nice shiny patina to the surface, tiny chip to a rim on the king, a few very minor surface scuffs and marks, a few natural flaws to the wood, some very gentle rubbing to the edges of the green baize. Otherwise excellent.
Small flaw to bottom of black pawn, otherwise excellent.
Excellent. Attractive figuring to the mahogany, a bit of rubbing to the baize interior, especially around the edges. No key.
A Note From Luke
Fabulous antique playing set. Weighted and in lovely condition. The “St George” pattern was a popular style during the 19th century (and especially before the Staunton Pattern was patented in 1849) and named after the Howard Staunton’s chess club, the St George’s.
The set and box are very similar to the sets produced by Jaques, although this particular set is unsigned.
