A “Northern” or “Edinburgh Upright” Pattern chess set, circa 1860. Scarce.
one side in boxwood, the other side in ebony, kings with urn-shaped tops, queens with large ball finials, bishops with mitres, knights as horses heads, rooks as turrets with battlements, pawns with ball finials, in the original mahogany box with a sliding lid.
King: 7.5cm high, base 2.7cm diameter
Pawn: 3.9cm high, base 1.3cm diameter
Box: 16cm wide, 12cm deep, 7.4cm high
