A Rare “Second World War Austerity” Staunton Pattern Weighted Boxwood Chess Set by John Jaques & Son Ltd, 1943
one side stained black to emulate ebony, green felt bases to the underside, the white king stamped JAQUES LONDON in black to the rim of the base, in a mahogany box with divided compartment and a green label: “The Original Staunton Chessmen...John Jaques & Son, Limited, London, England”, and wartime information label: “The black pieces of this set are made of boxwood stained black as we cannot import ebony at present”
