An Old English’ boxwood chess set, 18th century
one side ‘ebonised’ a dark brown colour, kings and queens with baluster knops, queens surmounted with balls, bishops as split mitres, knights with cleft tops, rooks as raised bulbous rusticated turrets, the king, the pawn 8.2cm high, the pawn 3.9cm high, in a wooden box with a sliding lid, 17.3cm wide. Scarce.
