A Rare English Boxwood Chess Part-Set, 18th century
one side stained ‘ebonised’ i.e. dark brown or black, the other side left natural (with a nice dark toffee patination), kings with cogged finials, queens with ball finials, bishops as split ‘tulip-shaped’ mitres, knights with 'canted’ or deliberately slanted tops, rooks with ‘hat’ finials, pawns with baluster knops and ball finials, one black pawn and one black rook missing, one missing natural pawn (29 pieces in total) (no box), illustrated for display purposes with an English Library Chess Board/Box which is being sold separately.
