A German Polished Bone “Selenus Pattern” Chess Set, Early 19th century
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with delicate pieced double galleries and surmounted with crosses, queens with single pieced galleries and crosses, bishops with mushroom knops, knights as arched horses’ heads over mushroom knops, rooks as raised turrets with brickwork and crescent moon finials, pawns with urn finials, in the original stained pine box with a sliding lid
King: 11.5cm high, (base: 3cm diameter)
Pawn: 5.5cm high, (base: 3cm diameter)
Box: 16cm wide, 12.7cm wide.
