A “Spanish Pulpit” bone chess set, circa 1800
one side stained brown (with traces of gilt), the other side left natural, kings and queen with carved feathered decoration, bishops as mitres surmounted with crosses, knights as arched horses’ heads, rooks as galleried turrets with spire finials, pawns with baluster knops and domed bases, the king 10.7cm high, the pawn 5.1cm high.
