indian-export-chess-set-circa-1840

July 28, 2016

An unusual Indian chess set, made for export to Great Britain during the early/mid nineteenth century period. The reeded ball finials are of interest; not disimilar, in some ways to the set owned by the Pepys family (of Samuel fame) and now in the collection of the London Museum.

The green stain is typical of 19th century Indian chess sets.
