A Good English Bone “Barleycorn Pattern” Chess Set, circa 1850

one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings and queens with carved ‘barleycorn’ friezes to the centre, bishops as mitres with bobble decoration to the sides, knights as horses’ heads, rooks as turrets with brickwork and flags, pawns with reeded ball finials, in a chip carved wooden box with a hinged lid
